CoolSculpting ®: The Hottest Trend in Plastic Surgery
Approved in 2010, the fat-freezing procedure, called CoolSculpting ®, became one of the hottest trends in the cosmetic surgery field.
A group of dermatologists from Southern California published findings in 2013 that stated the demand for CoolSculpting ® treatments grew more than 800 percent in only two years. They also reported that this procedure has become increasingly popular among males.
If done properly on the right patients, studies have found that the CoolSculpting ® procedure safely and effectively rids patients of pockets of fat that exercise and dieting have not been able to remove.
Cryolipolysis (fat freezing) can produce comparable results to liposuction with careful treatment planning. Cryolipolysis is a safe and effective nonsurgical procedure for localized fat removal that also provides high patient satisfaction levels.
The Science Behind Cryolipolysis
When people suffer frostbite, areas of tissue around the body suffer necrosis (death) where the freezing temperatures were applied. However, before the skin and muscle tissue around the area freezes, the underlying fat cells freeze first.
If a skier or hiker is lost in the woods and suffers frostbite, the time in which they are found is critical to save the parts of their body exposed to the freezing temperatures. It was discovered that when these people were discovered during the time that the fat cells were frozen, but before the surrounding tissue was damaged, that the fat cells would disappear after a time. After scientists realized this amazing fact about frostbite, they mimicked Mother Nature and used this finding to destroy unwanted fat cells.
How Does a CoolSculpting ® Session Work?
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the CoolSculpting ® session works like this:
- A molded cup is placed over the treatment area such as stomach, love handles, back, thighs, etc.
- With the use of heavy-duty suction, the fat bulge is pulled inside the paddles where it is chilled.
- Some of the fat cells in the cooled area are then destroyed by the freezing temperatures.
- The liver ultimately disposes the fat cells and eliminates them permanently from the body.
What are the Advantages of CoolSculpting ® over Liposuction?
CoolSculpting ® is a noninvasive procedure with few side effects. Noninvasive means that the introduction of instruments to the body is not required. A good example of a noninvasive procedure is an ultrasound.
In a 2013, study of 528 patients who received CoolSculpting ® treatments, only three complained of mild to moderate pain after the treatment! This pain rapidly disappeared after treatment was over. Temporary redness, bruising, tenderness, tingling, and dulling of sensation were also reported as side effects. Compared to the side effects of liposuction, these results were amazing. Normal activities can be resumed quickly after treatment.
Who is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting ®?
This procedure is not for someone who has a lot of weight to loose. Patients who undergo a CoolSculpting ® treatment should be in relatively good shape and not obese. Modest bulges of fat on the thighs, back, flanks, or abdomen that are resistant to diet and exercise are excellent targets for CoolSculpting ®.
Patients should note that CoolSculpting ® is not a weight-loss treatment, but rather better suited for treatment of limited areas of fat accumulation. For larger fat accumulations, liposuction may be a better option.
