Orange County CoolSculpting ® Blog
Plastic surgery has come a long way. There are now countless options that are safe and effective for addressing multiple areas of the body. But some areas are more difficult procedures than others, especially when it comes to patient satisfaction.
The thighs are perhaps the best example. Although thighplasty/thigh liftss are extremely popular, they also create significant scarring. They’re most popular with those that have experienced significant weight loss and are looking to remove excess skin and reshape their thighs, but for those that are simply looking to create more aesthetically pleasing thigh shapes, the risk of scarring makes it less preferable.
Similarly, the thigh surgery is prone to complications. Because of its location, it is at risk for wound opening, infections, and much more. All of these issues make the thighs a less popular place for surgical procedures.
CoolSculpting ® for the Thighs: A Study
For those reasons and more, the thighs are a popular location for non-surgical cosmetic procedures, like CoolSculpting ®. CoolSculpting ® has long been a great choice for anyone looking to achieve body contouring without surgery, but the thighs has quickly become one of the most popular areas.
However, it’s one thing to claim that CoolSculpting ® is beneficial for the thighs. It’s another to show it scientifically. After cryolipolysis received FDA clearing, some researchers decided to look at the effects of CoolSculpting ® on the thighs.
CoolSculpting ® had already been used “off label” on the thighs by trained experts, like Dr. Agha of The Aesthetic Center of Orange County. Yet it hadn’t received the same level of rigorous research at the time. In order to do this effectively, the researchers used the CoolFit applicator – a flat cup vacuum applicator. There were 41 participants in total. With each participant:
- Measurements were taken of the inner thigh circumference.
- Photos were taken of the thighs in a specific footing.
- Relevant weight data was taken, to factor in for changes in body weight.
Subjects were also told to maintain their body weight. Three subjects had either gained or lost 5lbs, which excluded them from the study because it could affect the visual appearance for reasons unrelated to CoolSculpting ®. All other subjects remained.
The Follow Up and Conclusion
Many checks were in place to measure efficacy and comfort. First, ultrasounds and circumference were taken at 16 weeks. On average there was a 1cm loss in circumference, with some patients losing even more. Clinicians were also asked to do a visual check. Physicians that played no part in the procedure were shown two photos – a before and after – and were tasked to choose the before. They were able to with over 90% accuracy, indicating that they were able to visually see benefits in the patients.
In addition, all patients were monitored regularly for any discomforts, and asked questionnaires about adverse events. No serious adverse events were reported. Some patients indicated numbness in the area, but in all cases the numbness resolved on its own with no medical intervention.
Overall, CoolSculpting ® was shown to produce excellent body contouring changes without any surgery, all with only a single treatment. Multiple treatments of the inner thighs are also believed to be possible with additional body contouring benefits.
