The Science Behind CoolSculpting ®
The CoolSculpting ® process targets and freezes fat cells using Cryolipolysis. A unique advanced technology using ultra cooling methods to treat areas of fat cells, Cryolipolysis has been effective at eliminating hard to rid pockets of fat around various areas of the body. Once the fat cells die, they are eliminated through the body’s regular metabolic process and gradually flushed out through apoptosis and phagocytosis. Published in more than 60 peer-reviewed abstract papers, the science behind CoolSculpting ® treatment is astounding. Leading journals of science, such as Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Dermatologic Surgery, published clinical efficacy, safety, and tolerability studies. Other studies have reported the positive data related to patient satisfaction, while still more provide details about CoolSculpting ® scientific studies.

Supporting Publications and Scientific Studies
The concept behind CoolSculpting ® was invented by Massachusetts General Hospital Doctors Dieter Manstein, MD, PhD and R. Rox Anderson, MD. Several peer-reviewed articles and clinical studies have discussed the success of CoolSculpting ®.
In one study, scientists found a 20 to 80 percent reduction in fat layer thickness occurring over a 3-month period following Cryolipolysis treatment. Temporary numbness, erythema of the skin, and bruising were common observations at the treatment site which resolved in 1 week. No reporting of scarring, ulceration, or alterations in blood lipid or liver function profiles were seen. It is important to note that the study found absolutely no significant adverse side effects in their studies with any effected being minor and temporary.
The study concluded that, although not completely understood why it happens, the safety and efficiency of the non-invasive procedure was demonstrated in the study. Further studies focusing on the mechanism and discovering the full potential of the technology is needed.
In another study, of European patients that received CoolSculpting ® treatment, 86 percent of patients reported satisfaction with the final results and 82 percent of patients stated they would recommend the procedure to others. Results were shown at 2 and 5-years post-treatment, even when patients had some fluctuations in body weight.
The CoolSculpting ® procedure is different from other types of non-invasive fat reduction procedures. Other methods use heat, high-intensity forced ultrasound, or even chemical injections to rid patients of stubborn fat pockets.
With respect to targeting the proper tissue depth and causing unintended damage to other areas close to the fat layer, such as skin or muscle tissue, other fat removal approaches fall short due to potential technical challenges. The predictability of using these other techniques is not certain. The CoolSculpting ® procedure, in contrast, kills only the fat cells in an area and gradually reduces the fat layer while protecting the other surrounding tissue. There have been no other technologies that have been as successful and safe as CoolSculpting ®.
