Orange County CoolSculpting ® Blog
Ever since CoolSculpting ® was FDA cleared and the science behind cryolipolysis validated, many people have wondered if it some type of Do It Yourself home CoolSculpting ® might be possible, and if there was a way to use ice, cold, or some other type of device to freeze fat and sculpt your body.
It is theoretically possible to use some type of cold item, like ice, to try to freeze fat, and if that’s the case then theoretically it is possible to do some form of cryolipolysis (fat removal through freezing) with some type of at home system. But theory and reality are not always equal.
First, there is no medical evidence that something simple, like ice on the stomach, can cause any important amount of fat loss. Second, there is no home technology that addresses the needs that are necessary to make home cryolipolysis possible. Any at home method will suffer from:
- No Fat Vacuum – Fat moves away from the skin when it starts to cool in order to protect the cells from damage.CoolSculpting ® uses a vacuum to carefully pull fat towards the surface, thus making it possible to target fat cells that would otherwise run away. If you simply cool your skin, most of the fat cells will move closer to the body to keep it warm, and you won’t see many benefits.
- No Targeting – CoolSculpting ® needs to be performed in specific places to get maximum contouring benefits. That is not possible with any DIY home CoolSculpting ® system, which must be done over time and addresses fat indiscriminately without necessarily accounting for the shape that you’re hoping to achieve. If it worked, it would leave you with patchy weight loss in random areas.
- No Perfect Temperature – Finally, these machines are programmed to provide the perfect temperature to maximize fat burning without damaging the skin and organs. That is something not possible with ice, and potentially dangerous with any other DIY home CoolSculpting ® application.
- CoolSculpting ® applicators are designed to pull the targeted tissue into a suction cup. As the tissue is suctioned, it folds on itself within the applicator. The cooling then is applied to the suctioned and folded tissue from the sides of the applicator. This creates cryolipolysis on both sides of the tissue. A home CoolSculpting ® system will be able to only apply ice on the surface of the skin. Although the fat on the surface will cool down, the majority of the deeper fat will stay close to the muscles and will never chill. It is the ability of the CoolSculpting ® applicators to pull fat away from the muscle that makes it work.
CoolSculpting ® is based on some unique principles that require special technology to harness, and that’s what you get with the Zeltiq CoolSculpting ® system. There is currently no safe, do it yourself alternative, and certainly no way to do so in less than an hour.
